Kazimierz as an independent town that lied on the other side of Wisla river was erected in 14th century by Polish King Kazimierz The Great who invited Jews to Krakow. He knew that Jews would bring the culture, rise economy and make Krakow place much richer and stronger. In 1495 Jews from Krakow were moved to Kazimierz and it remained Jewish till the 2nd World War when closed in the ghetto that was finally closed down and all the Jews were sent to death camps. After the war the district was left without attention and was slowly turning into ruin. Since the fall of communism Kazimierz has being under renovation and restoration of the Jewish culture. Nowadays there is about 150 native Jews in Krakow.
