Ghetto windows

Ghetto windows, okna getta, getto, Litzmannstadt, Lodz, Łódź, Franciszkańska, Franciszkanska, Knüpferstraße, Franzstraße, Polska, Poland, Polen, camera: Samsung GX10, lens: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG, photo: Krystian Kozerawski, www.kozerawski.com

The tenant house at Franciszkanska Street (close to the Wolborska Street and Smugowa Street). The one of the first tenants on the ghetto side (the gate was placed just about 100 meters away). The old tenants of old Baluty and Marysin haven’t been renovated for decades - I dare say, they haven’t been renovated at all since the pre war time. As you can see, some of the windows have the original wooden frames.

The old windows are like my camerades in arms. From this window I saw the “actions” on the streets where armed Gestapo men brought Jews from the buildings and streets to the trucks and their final destination:Chelmno and later Auschwitz. I lived on Brzezinska 30 and when I visited Lodz only 3 weeks ago, the same windows- some w/o new frames, greeted me like an old friend. But even the renovated windows have a sad look for they underline more the ugliness of the neglected ones. The new windows in the old buildings look like a proverbial rose on an old coat. For me the ghetto is such a tragic place, that renovations seems to be absurdal. I am glad to be far, far away.
