Another photo of Old Jewish Cemetery in Kazimierz district of Krakow (Cracow), Poland. Photo taken during my yesterday’s trip to that city. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Poland where the dead had being buried from 16th till 19th century. The cemetery is placed in the heart of the Jewish district and lies just behind the only one open orthodox synagogue (of 7 synagogues in Kazimierz). Camera: Samsung GX 10.

Old Jewish cemetery in Kazimierz - Jewish district of Cracow / Krakow. The graves in the snow look so romantic. Kazimierz as an independent town that lied on the other side of Wisla river was erected in 14th century by Polish King Kazimierz The Great who invited Jews to Krakow. He knew that Jews would bring the culture, rise economy and make Krakow place much richer and stronger. In 1495 Jews from Krakow were moved to Kazimierz and it remained Jewish till the 2nd World War when closed in the ghetto that was finally closed down and all the Jews were sent to death camps. After the war the district was left without attention and was slowly turning into ruin. Since the fall of communism Kazimierz has being under renovation and restoration of the Jewish culture. Nowadays there is about 150 native Jews in Krakow.

Photo taken during the hard and freezing winter period in Poland in 2006, just nearby my apartment. I was trying to take a photo of ice crystals on the branch of the tree and the bird in the background found himself in the photo only by coincidence.
